Podcast Summary

Lauren Aquilino starts the podcast by explaining why it was 1.5hours behind recording schedule, after which Sydney Mulligan introduces their guest for this episode: Emily Poulton. The three talk about how they all met each other IRL, which turns into a heated debate about knotted headbands, and a how-to guide on how to appear fancy on a Zoom call, and some casual The Home Edit trashing.

We learn a bit about how Emily got into the Marketo space, and about her Marketo street cred, with lots of ooing and ahhhing around Revives, which then turns into a vocabulary lesson on the word jumper and its many meanings across North American and British English - as well as the word pants.

The conversation continues to learn more about Emily, taking a wild sidetrack to tattoo parlours and Lauren approving team face tats of Emmie’s iconic Lady Effington. Let’s see how that one works out. The trio discuss craziest work trip moments; Emily and Lauren both regale their stories about inappropriately caressing headliners’ arms during Summit parties - as well as taking the chat back to tattoos.

Emily shares the work pals she would like to work with again, including work husbands which then turns into a height competition between all marketing operations team members: Jolly Green Giants vs Polly Pockets. If you are taller than Matt Shaver - at a whopping 6”5 / 1m95 - comment here because you could be adding unmatched vertical expertise to your team!

The hosts then ask Emily about their fun Christmas present segment: something you want, something you need, something to wear, something to read, where they discover that Emily wants a patio in London - which sparks a vocabulary discussion over the word garden, and the hosts learn that the Queen is dead, that pubs don’t close as early as they think in London and that Emily is the most eligible bachelorette at Emmie - just kidding #cats!

The PFB on the streets uncovers the need to reach out to Emmie for all your GDPR needs, robots taking over,  Emily’s love of anagrams, Taylor Swift vs Mean Girls the musical in Vegas, to let the Emmie team know if you have ever been personally victimised by Emily’s British malapropisms. Chip, chip, cheerio, toodle pip.

Sydney Mulligan: Hello and welcome to the Pretty Funny Business podcast. We are so excited to finally be starting this, one hour and 11 minutes after our originally scheduled podcast recording time. But you know what, I'm considering it lucky because in New York it is now 11:11 so make a wish! My my wish today is that we have a wonderful podcast guest, Emily Poulton, and it already came true! I'm Sydney!

Lauren Aquilino: I'm Lauren. I'm sorry. I don't think we've said this publicly yet, but I don't love dogs. But I feel like a dog with its tail between its legs. Hey, for the record, I do like cats. I do. I can't have them because my husband is allergic. And so I just, you know, I just don't talk about animals - they're not a part of my life - but I feel like a dog with a tail between its legs. I try really hard. I am a chronically late person, typically by a handful of minutes. This morning, I was up very early: I had myself ready even at - I don't know what time it was - 8:45, 9 o'clock. I was like, Sydney, the kid is still sleeping. I have a feeling this isn't gonna go well. And then she just kept sleeping, which is not like her, she's been getting over being sick. And then there was a whole meltdown over it being inside out day. But she didn't want to wear inside out day, but like every other day of the week, she wants to dress with her clothes inside out. And so by the time I got her to school, it was already 10 o'clock on the dot, which is what time we were supposed to start recording this, I get over to the office where I keep all the podcast stuff, and the joke is on me, cause I had moved all the podcast stuff back to my house. So I sat there trying to make the best of a bad situation and my computer decided to only make it worse. Do you know Sydney - I would say like the first three or four episodes, I recorded our podcast with that exact setup and my computer just decided to run a fan today: it was like, “oh! It’s 71 degrees outside”. I don't know what that is in Celsius -I'm sorry for Emily and all of our other non-American listeners - and it was just like sweating I guess. And just could not turn off the fan. So anyway, I ran back home because my office is five minutes from my house and voilà, here we are! I'm very sorry. I'm just sorry, I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I feel awful.

Sydney Mulligan: We made it. You know what, it's okay. It happens to the best of us, also you're coming off of a long international trip, you're still very jet lagged and I'm just happy to see your face. I'm happy that you're back. Missed you. Happy Emily’s here, happy we made it!

Emily Poulton: Ditto, all round.

Lauren Aquilino: I have my happy light on too. So I'm feeling extra energized today.

Sydney Mulligan: Well that's good. Absorb your salt and your chacras and whatever

Lauren Aquilino: It’s fake vitamin D r eally

Sydney Mulligan: great, love it, love it, love it. All right, well, today we have Emily with us. Emily just joined us here at Emmie, we're so excited. So we're just gonna get to know Emily a little bit today. Lauren and I both know Emily from past lives, separately. Emily and I had the fun almost experience of wanting - I don't remember why we started talking about this. Oh, I think it was at Summit, maybe in 2018? 2017? No it was 2018 because I was just about to move to New York and Emily you were like remodeling your house or something in London, and we were like, oh we should do a home swap like The Holiday, that movie with Cameron Diaz and we were like, wow! what a fantastic idea, we should absolutely do this!

Emily Poulton: I'm still waiting Sydney!

Sydney Mulligan: Listen, I did move to New York and then I immediately got pregnant so that derailed things a little bit, and then there was a pandemic and that derailed things a little bit more, but we're emerging on the other side

Emily Poulton: It’s an open invite.

Sydney Mulligan: I may have two children now, but that’s fine

Emily Poulton: There’s space. It's fine, we’ll get bunk beds. I am looking forward to visiting New York and having a cool pad with a cool piano to stay in

Sydney Mulligan: Yeah. And you know, you don’t even have to bring pack n’ play because I have a crib here for your cats

Emily Poulton: Oh no, you'll have to cat-sit the cats when you're here though.

Lauren Aquilino: But we just talked about she's not gonna do that.

Emily Poulton: Please don’t leave your children!

Lauren Aquilino: Oh yeah. That's a fair swap.

Sydney Mulligan: I'll leave the kids and you’ll leave the cats!

Lauren Aquilino: Yeah!

Emily Poulton: Evil laugh!

Lauren Aquilino: you just gotta go take them to daycare

Emily Poulton: It’s fine they go outside, they have a door

Lauren Aquilino: Um, you'll be good.

Sydney Mulligan: yeah, the kids go outside too!

Lauren Aquilino: at least every other day, but you'll be fine.

Emily Poulton: I have nephews, I know how to get them dressed. It's all good. Can I bring a friend? In the form of a nanny.

Sydney Mulligan:Yes.

Emily Poulton: That was fun times and I think we should resurrect that fun video that we have of us. We met by chance because we were both at the photo booth trying on stupid hats and having the time of our lives. I think it was the advocacy party because I definitely wasn't a Mug Leader, where I also met Adele, who knew you.

Lauren Aquilino: You just met Adele then, Emily?

Emily Poulton: We weren't friends. We had met, but we hadn't had any fun

Lauren Aquilino: Was that the year of the Fearless 50, like with all the big photos on the walls

Emily Poulton: I believe it is, but it could have been the year before that, they're all melting into one. I remember we had the champion jackets on I think those were 2018. And yes, that was the Fearless50. Big banner poster year. I miss that year.

Sydney Mulligan: Yeah. I know it was 2018 because I was not pregnant.

Lauren Aquilino: that’s how I count everything too. I was there every other year for a while. I just had Pippa 2019 and then Covid. I remember I met Emily - it must have been either the same year, one of those two years of the Fearless50 - when she had her beautiful face plastered on a wall

Emily Poulton: It was a billboard. Excuse me, excuse me, can we just set the record straight here? It was a 50 foot billboard outside of the Moscone centre.

Lauren Aquilino: Outside right, sorry I should have said exterior wall. It's all good girl.

Emily Poulton: Do not rob this from me!

Lauren Aquilino: Just kiddinh! So I remember we met briefly then by introduction in passing, and then just as I was leaving,

Emily Poulton: I don’t remember that! Was I drunk?

Lauren Aquilino: I wasn't gonna say it, but now that you did. So that's how I knew who you were. And then, you know, once you get to meet someone and then you kind of start to notice them like on Community and things like that. But then when I was leaving Revenue Pulse, Emily was just coming, so we were kind of ships in the night there, but she ended up taking over all, if not most, of my clients. And so we spent about a month in transition and we became fast friends.

Emily Poulton: It was the best month of my life!

Lauren Aquilino: We became fast friends cuz we both kept wearing headbands.

Emily Poulton: And I'm very disappointed you haven't got one on today

Lauren Aquilino: You know Sydney

Sydney Mulligan: I think I accidentally made Lauren super self conscious about the knotted headbands

Emily Poulton: Excuse me. What?

Sydney Mulligan: Ok, here's the situation. I have no issue with the knotted headband, but I…

Lauren Aquilino: She does have an issue with the people.

Emily Poulton: Go on.

Sydney Mulligan: You know the Home Edit?

Emily Poulton: And they have headbands.

Sydney Mulligan: Just the one girl, it’s like her entire personality is that she wears a knotted headband. So that’s all I said. I told Lauren that wearing a knotted headband is not a substitute for personality and I have not seen her wear a knotted headband in my presence since.

Lauren Aquilino: I said it is part of my personality

Emily Poulton: Well, I feel they should come back

Sydney Mulligan: I don't have any issues with it. It’s just, you know, you can do something other than wear a knotted headband. It doesn't have to be all knotted headbands every day.

Lauren Aquilino: The thing about the headband is are auto-fancy on a Zoom call

Emily Poulton: This was our whole motto

Lauren Aquilino: Like plain. Fancy. No earrings. Earrings. All you need is earrings and a headband. And it's like, it doesn't matter what you're wearing.

Emily Poulton: And a cute jumper?

Lauren Aquilino: What’s a jumper? Why?

Emily Poulton: it’s a sweater for the North Americans.

Lauren Aquilino: A jumper is a sweater? Do you know, what a jumper is in America? It's full body. So unless you're showing full body on Zoom, unless you're doing full body meetings, we're not wearing jumpers here.

Sydney Mulligan: Okay? So like were you keeping a set of earrings and a knotted headband in your desk drawer to whip out in case of an on camera client call?

Lauren Aquilino: Yes,

Emily Poulton: at all times

Sydney Mulligan: I love it.

Emily Poulton: I feel like I need to show my headband collection, it's very organized, but some of it is in my suitcase that I still haven't unpacked from Summit, so maybe for another time.

Sydney Mulligan: More power to the knotted headbands, there’s no issue with them here

Lauren Aquilino: I have a little braid today. It's a knotted hair.

Sydney Mulligan: I mean, I'm talking like the Home Edit people. She sells like stickers and shit with a silhouette of her wearing the knotted headband. It's like truly, her brand is the knotted headband.

Emily Poulton: We wore them before that was cool.

Lauren Aquilino: I'm not sure that's true. I think we were running with it and she was running with it alongside us and then she passed us up and we were like not paying attention whatsoever. And we started walking cuz we got tired, but we still had our headbands on and now

Sydney Mulligan: All right, well I think we need to move on from the knotted headbands or because this is going to become the fashion podcast/Home Edit trashing podcast - the knotted headbands brought you together

Emily Poulton: But that's how we bonded!

Lauren Aquilino: Yes. Fine

Sydney Mulligan: Fine. Emily.

Emily Poulton: Yes dear?

Sydney Mulligan: Why don't you just tell us a little bit about yourself, as if we don't already know you, and why you're at Emmie and what you’re excited about doing and all of that

Emily Poulton: Oh dear. These weren't approved questions. Hello! Hello people whom I do not know and have never met. I am Emily, a bit about myself. A bit about work self, personal self, who knows?

Lauren Aquilino: All of it.

Emily Poulton: All of it! A bit about work self, I am a freelance Marketo Consultant, how about that? And also happen to be, part of Emmie Collective, helping out on the European side of things. Let's not forget about that. And I’ve been working in Marketo for - I think it's gonna be nine years, so I'm gonna say nine years. It sounds a bit less childish than eight and a half years.

Lauren Aquilino: Eight and three quarters.

Emily Poulton: But you know how we roll

Lauren Aquilino: How did you get started?

Emily Poulton: So I started at a company. Am I allowed to name companies? Can I say that ? Or do I have to say a famous…

Lauren Aquilino: Go ahead

Emily Poulton: Okay. It's a company called Euromonitor International, and they were looking for a Mrs. Marketo, literally that's what they called it. I had never used it before, but I had been working at a start-up and working on MailChimp email newsletters, creating landing pages on the website to sell products and creating discount codes and creating forms for sign-ups: all disjointed. And then I discovered Marketo at the Marketing Week Live event, and I was like, this is amazing. And poor naive -how old was I - 26/27 year old Emily was like, “oh, we need to get Marketo at this company”. There was like four of us, so obviously that didn't work out. So I applied for this job for Mrs. Marketo and I was the only candidate that had actually heard of the system, so I got the job! Look at that. And my manager…

Lauren Aquilino: Requirements: heard of the system Marketo. How do you even put that as a requirement? Because then they hear of it as soon as they say it. It’s a stupid requirement.

Emily Poulton: I know! Well, this was a long time ago, guys. It was only just jetting off in the UK, but so my manager at the time was in Chicago and she is now a big cheese at an agency, a big agency in the world. She taught me everything I know. Shout out to her, she's awesome. We like her. And that's how it started, but then it kind of spiraled into all sorts of things: from getting to know the system, to designing a system, to implementation, migration, running, destroying (wasn't me), sun setting - it's a polite word isn't it, to agency life and now it's freelance life. So it's definitely been a rollercoaster and I've really enjoyed the people part of it, like meeting people, obviously the technology is what you get the job and stuff, but in terms of like who you meet on the way, and who you get to work with, that to me is the most important. Like who'd have thought back in 2018 when I bumped into you and we decided to house swap like The Holiday that we would be here? And who've thought that our love of knotted hairbands, would've brought us here Lauren? Do you know what I mean, you just never know. I have some stories from Summit, who'd have thought gambling drunk with people turned into business meetings further down the line, right?

Sydney Mulligan: that’s just how the men have been doing it for years you know?

Emily Poulton: Hey, we need to get in on this craze.

Sydney Mulligan: I love it

Lauren Aquilino: We need to get on this craze!

Sydney Mulligan: Well we already we discussed your Fearless50 billboard on the outside of Moscone, which I do remember. I did not get the outside billboard, I got the inside banner, and I would like say that they told me they would send me that banner

Emily Poulton: They said they would send me that banner!

Sydney Mulligan: And they never did. It absolutely went in the trash. I was gonna turn it into a shower curtain, anyway! Other than the Fearless50. Yeah, I thought it was weird right? I was going to turn it into a shower curtain and then use it as a giveaway at my MUG

Emily Poulton: Oh, so that other people, when they're in the shower, I mean, where would your eye level be? Wouldn't that bit, I dunno

Lauren Aquilino: Don't worry. Everything Sydney does very intentional. Everything she does is intentional.

Emily Poulton: I’m keeping my pants on

Sydney Mulligan: I'm a mastermind. Okay. Anyway. Other than the Fearless50 tell us all your other Marketo street cred

Emily Poulton: Oh, dear. Ooh, I've got a Revvie here look! Look at it.

Sydney Mulligan: You do? Wow. A Revvie!

Lauren Aquilino: I didn’t know you won a Revvie!

Emily Poulton: But look!

Sydney Mulligan: You could kill someone with that, it’s so pointy.

Emily Poulton: Exactly. Watch out people. This is again, 2018, the year everything happened.

Sydney Mulligan: Wow.

Lauren Aquilino: What a year.

Sydney Mulligan: Good year.

Emily Poulton: and nothing has happened since! It was a great year. It was for Marketer Of The Year darlings. Look at this.

Sydney Mulligan: look at you!

Lauren Aquilino: Congratulations!

Emily Poulton: They let me on the plane with it and everything! Thanks babe!

Sydney Mulligan: You got that through customs!

Lauren Aquilino: Did you ever get a Revvie Sydney?

Sydney Mulligan: Hell no. I don't

Emily Poulton: Too cool

Lauren Aquilino: Yeah, I was Revvie nominated, but I did not win

Sydney Mulligan: Here's the thing, here's the thing. If you go to a partner too early in your career, you’re never going to get a Revvie.

Lauren Aquilino: You’re done. I was I was at GE when we lost our Revvie

Sydney Mulligan: I was only a few years in when I went to Etumos. And I knew like that was it. Like maybe I could get a client to win a Revvie - I would not be acknowledged for it anyway.

Lauren Aquilino: Yeah. You know out all of the Marketo stuff, I think the Revvies are most impressive to me. I'm proud of you.

Sydney Mulligan: I’d agree, it’s definitely the most exclusive

Emily Poulton: Can't believe you didn't know that.

Sydney Mulligan: You're hired !

Emily Poulton:Well it was the last Revvie.

Lauren Aquilino: Yeaaaaay!

Sydney Mulligan: You're hired again!

Emily Poulton: Well you did fire me earlier for liking

Sydney Mulligan: Despite the cat situation, you can be hired

Emily Poulton: No, it wasn't the cats, it was the gluten. Just rude!

Sydney Mulligan: Oh you’re right, it was the gluten!

Lauren Aquilino: It's just a lot

Sydney Mulligan: gluten and cats. That's still two strikes. That's still two strikes. We’ve managed to offend so many people already.

Emily Poulton: I’m still here.

Sydney Mulligan: Any gluten intolerant people, any cat lovers, I’m sorry, we still love you.

Emily Poulton: I should be wearing my cat lady jumper. Where is it? I will wear it next time - if I get invited again. Jum-per! Look, we have to be inclusive.

Lauren Aquilino: I’m totally fine with that. I just wanna be specific and translate that because again, for North Americans, jumpers are full body outfits, and unless they're gonna be doing full body calls

Sydney Mulligan: Okay, wait a minute.

Emily Poulton: Well, you one saying to keep my pants on

Sydney Mulligan: Lauren, when you say jumper what are you thinking of?

Lauren Aquilino: a romper

Emily Poulton: a jumpsuit?

Sydney Mulligan: That's a jumpsuit.

Emily Poulton: not a playsuit.

Lauren Aquilino: So jumpers are exclusive.

Sydney Mulligan: No. A jumper is the overall situation that's a skirt on the bottom

Lauren Aquilino: Yeah, I had one of those in Catholic school.

Sydney Mulligan: That's a jumper.

Lauren Aquilino: Still a full body outfit.

Sydney Mulligan: It's still a full body outfit but the way you said full body outfit made me believe you were talking about a jumpsuit

Lauren Aquilino: I am talking about a jumpsuit.

Sydney Mulligan: yes that is true - you are talking about a jumpsuit

Lauren Aquilino: aka romper.

Emily Poulton: But you wouldn’t wear a jumper with a jumpsuit cause then you just can't go and pee.

Sydney Mulligan: Now you're trapped in there.

Emily Poulton: Definitely are. Anyway!

Emily Poulton: so the Revvie thing, it was the last Revvies because then it became you know, Adobe meets Marketo (Adobe Experience Maker Awards). So no one else is gonna steal that from me.

Sydney Mulligan: Good for you. You're the last Marketer of the Year

Lauren Aquilino: Reigning champ forever and ever.

Emily Poulton: I am yes!

Sydney Mulligan: Forever and ever

Lauren Aquilino: Yes.

Emily Poulton: bring it on! If you need some marketing, I'm the marketer to do it!

Sydney Mulligan: Marketer of the Year! Ok so you’ve got the Revvie, the Fearless50

Emily Poulton: got two Champs, 2017 and 2018.

Sydney Mulligan: Nice.

Emily Poulton: MUG Leader of London - Co-MUG Leader

Lauren Aquilino: We were Champs the same year! years!

Sydney Mulligan: All three of us!

Lauren Aquilino: 2017/2018.

Emily Poulton: oh my gosh, how did we not know this?

Lauren Aquilino: 2017/2018. Yeah.

Sydney Mulligan: Well I was 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019

Lauren Aquilino: Oh

Emily Poulton: Well, you are just too good for us, okay!

Lauren Aquilino: I was 2017, 2018, and then I was like, I'm not doing any more free work for you people.

Emily Poulton: I didn't have to build it, I just had to give a quote. I guess I got out of that. That's what happens when you're on this side of the pond, you don’t get asked for much.

Lauren Aquilino: They're like, we don't know what this will come out looking like for the American crew. The Brits.

Sydney Mulligan: I have another anecdote to share but I feel like I can’t

Lauren Aquilino: keep your pants on. Yeah.

Emily Poulton: You do know what pants are here? You do know this? That pants are like knickers.

Sydney Mulligan: I do know that pants are undies.

Lauren Aquilino: Underpants?

Sydney Mulligan: Mm-hmm.

Emily Poulton: I wear trousers

Lauren Aquilino: Wait, when we say keep your pants on…

Sydney Mulligan: Have you never talked to a British person before?

Emily Poulton: Lauren, hello?

Lauren Aquilino: I know what knickers are and I know what trousers are, but I did not know that pants are underpants.

Sydney Mulligan: Mm-hmm. Also, you can say like “ oh Pants”. You know like “Pants! I fucked something up”. Oh pants! Marketo never fucking published this eBook

Emily Poulton: Pants. It's pants. That's pants. You know what Lauren?

Sydney Mulligan: Pants I wasted my time yet again!

Emily Poulton: I'm gonna send you - did you ever read those books? Angus, Snogging and Full Frontal Nudity?

Sydney Mulligan: I did!

Emily Poulton: There you go. That's where you're getting your expressions from.

Lauren Aquilino: Well, I will.

Sydney Mulligan: Actually, the pants thing I know from Julz

Emily Poulton: There we go. Oh, I saw Julz at Summit. It was amazing. Yeah I got some big hugs. That was nice. But yes, I'm sure Veronica will have some

Sydney Mulligan: Even though she's defected, she’s not British anymore. She's a full American now. She’s got her green card.

Emily Poulton: Well she still sounds British!

Sydney Mulligan: She does. I'm friends with her on Facebook. I love her so much. I visit with her on Facebook, and her and her husband are visiting Wales right now, where they're from. And someone commented and said her husband looks just like Ricky Gervais, and he totally does! Oh my god, exactly like Ricky Gervais. And I went to a different picture of him and I commented Jay, you really do look like Ricky Gervais and then he angry reacted: “I don’t look anything like him!”

Emily Poulton: Is he Welsh? Did he say it with the accent?

Sydney Mulligan: Yeah, but I can't do the Welsh accent.

Emily Poulton: Oh, you’re not going to attempt it?

Sydney Mulligan: I have met him. They came to visit me in North Carolina one time. They're sweet, they’re really sweet people. He’s a tattoo artist, a very talented tattoo artist!

Emily Poulton: Well maybe we should get Emmie tattoos of Lady Effington.

Lauren Aquilino: I'm in.

Sydney Mulligan: Tattoo parlour. Parlour? Tattoo Parlour!

Emily Poulton: Let’s do it.

Sydney Mulligan: Tattoo Salon?

Emily Poulton: Tattoo Parlour, I would say.

Sydney Mulligan: Tattoo Parlour in Texas, where they live. Very talented.

Emily Poulton: Where are we gonna get the tattoos ?

Sydney Mulligan: in Texas.

Emily Poulton: on our bodies!

Sydney Mulligan: Face tattoos!

Emily Poulton: Oh, geez.

Sydney Mulligan: Mm-hmm.

Emily Poulton: Oh pants!

Sydney Mulligan: Okay! We are getting so sidetracked. Okay. Fearless50, Revvie, Champion for a couple of years, London MUG Leader.

Emily Poulton: Okay. And then for Fearless 50 though, not only was it the ginormous poster, but I got to be on the keynote stage Sarah at the time, and I got to tell a whole story to the world. And I got to freak out about telling said story, which was fun. And also the photo shoot for that poster was amazing.I got to be in a video. It was the best time ever! And then I got to go to all these champagne kind of side things and VIP areas and I got to meet, that skier lady - Lindsay Vonn got to meet her. She's a giant, I’m tiny. And that actor that I need to remember the name of… but anyway, it was fun. It was great!

Lauren Aquilino: It was maybe one of the Chris': Chris Pine, Chris Evans, Chris Pratt

Sydney Mulligan: Yeah, they’re all the same, they’re all just Chris Hemford to me

Lauren Aquilino: Hemsworth.

Emily Poulton: Kevin Hart!

Lauren Aquilino: You got to meet Kevin Hart?

Sydney Mulligan: Oh, you met him?

Emily Poulton: I have a picture with him!

Sydney Mulligan: That’s awesome!

Emily Poulton: I know.

Sydney Mulligan: Did you know Lauren is best friends with Will Smith and that she intimately caressed his arm for an extended period of time?

Lauren Aquilino: I'm sorry. I’m sorry Will.

Emily Poulton: I’m SO jealous.

Sydney Mulligan: Were you at that Will Smith party that one year? Or was that pre- you?

Emily Poulton: No, I was at the Flo Rida, one where I intimately caressed Flo Rida, but he was having none of it! He was like “get away from me!”.

Lauren Aquilino: That was not the same year?

Emily Poulton: No

Sydney Mulligan: That was when it was in Vegas before it was Adobe Summit.

Emily Poulton: That yeah. No, I wasn't there.

Sydney Mulligan: Oh that sucks, that was one of the best parties of my life. Okay, speaking of conferences - and I know you just got back from Adobe Summit: the one delegate from Emmie that decided to brave Las Vegas in the year of our Lord 2023 - funniest story from a conference or work trip?

Emily Poulton: I have many. I have many so I've had to really distill it down because they incriminate lots of people. Usually the best stories do.

Lauren Aquilino: Pants and knickers on!

Sydney Mulligan: Anonymize. Pants and knickers on, anonymize where necessary.

Emily Poulton: Pants and knickers on, anonymized, and there's even like pre-summit stories but I'm gonna stick with the one I'm gonna stick with, I think. And this trip was very tame. Like there was nothing, it was tame. And I was talking to Courtny about it earlier - Courtny my MUG leader friend Courtny: shoutout by the way - but anyway, so last year there was one of the first going back in person events, which was the Forrester event in Austin. Did you go to that one? No!

Lauren Aquilino: I don't do stuff, but go ahead.

Emily Poulton: You don’t do stuff, well it was great. It was fun. One of my old work besties lives in Austin, Texas so I got to hang out with her and she's obsessed with tattoos, or as my grandmother would say, tattoos

Sydney Mulligan: You should have gone to see Julz’s husband, they live in Austin!

Emily Poulton: Well, that leads me on to the story of her saying ”you know, while you are in Austin, you should really get a tattoo” on this kind of four day pitch of “let's get a tattoo, let's get a tattoo”. And then I'm like thinking about it seriously. And I said to her, “oh, I found a tattoo place that's open till midnight”. So we're at this work drinks event, you know lots of booze, free, flowing, no dinner: drinking, drinking, drinking, drinking, drinking. And then it's like 11:15 and Amanda (her name is Amanda), shoutout to Amanda. She's like, “Emily, it's 11:15, I've got an Uber waiting for us. Come on, let's go! We're doing it now.” And we're like, “okay everyone, we're gonna go get tattoos!” And then we managed to rope in my poor colleague at the time Manasi and another poor kind-of-colleague at the time Spencer to come with us. And we go and we get drunken tattoos. Mm-hmm. And they're matching!

Sydney Mulligan: You really did it? Oh my god!

Lauren Aquilino: And they're matching.

Sydney Mulligan: Wait is that a tiny crab?

Lauren Aquilino: Why?

Sydney Mulligan: Why is it a tiny crab?

Emily Poulton: Well because it's my star sign.

Sydney Mulligan:Oh, are you a cancer?

Emily Poulton: I am a July baby!

Sydney Mulligan: Me too!

Emily Poulton: I know. You need to get one too.

Lauren Aquilino: Did all get you all get crabs? Like you're all cancers?

Emily Poulton: Amanda and I did, and then Manasi got a little paw print for her doggy, here. It's not very appropriate for showing to everybody, but she still did it because we're like “show them your tattoo”. And we went back to the party after that, and that was a legendary story. And I think I actually have a photo of us displaying said tattoos proudly… I need to find it… nevermind! I'll find it for you.

Sydney Mulligan: That's okay, this is an audio podcast!

Emily Poulton: I will find it to show you two. So yeah, that was a funnier story I think, because then it was kind of like, “oh remember that time we went to that work conference got tattoos, matching tattoos?”.

Lauren Aquilino: Love that! I am all for! I just came back from Israel where I 100% within an hour heard about getting a tattoo and then got a tattoo which was really fun.

Sydney Mulligan: It’s extremely on brand

Lauren Aquilino: I think we should - it's extremely on brand - I think that we should… Yeah! We're gonna show your tattoo on the internet and then everyone can chime in if they also have any relatively unplanned tattoos. It's always been my dream to get to the point where like getting a tattoo is just like “meh”.

Emily Poulton: Is that your first one?

Lauren Aquilino: It’s just another one. It's my second.

Emily Poulton: Ok this was my first one. Like first one ever!

Sydney Mulligan: Wow, that is chaotic but iconic.

Emily Poulton: I spent this amount of time with a virgin body and then BOOM I got inked. And I kept my pants on!

Lauren Aquilino: You made me ink.

Emily Poulton: and Amanda paid for it! So that was great.

Sydney Mulligan: OK. Wow.

Lauren Aquilino: That’s nice, thanks Amanda! Bogo!

Sydney Mulligan: Bogo oh my god. Bogo flash tattoos. Wow okay that's great. Well we've asked quite a few people this question now about the craziest work story and no one has permanently altered their body in any way, until now.

Emily Poulton: Well that was a tame one as well, so….

Sydney Mulligan: I love it. I love it. Okay. Well you mentioned a few people that are your besties and your pals that you love hanging out with, overall top 2-3 people you would love to work with again

Lauren Aquilino: Or for the first time

Sydney Mulligan: Top 2-3 people that you would like to work with, period.

Emily Poulton: Well, luckily I guess what I'm saying, ... oh hang on, you changed it! No, no.

Sydney Mulligan: You can pick answers to whatever you want Emily!

Emily Poulton: No! Obviously it makes it easy now that I am working with Lauren again

Sydney Mulligan: That’s cheating, that doesn’t count!

Emily Poulton: so I don't have to say that out of my two to three people. Exactly, it happened and it's happening so hazzah! I have mentioned Amanda and I'm gonna mention her again. I worked with her when I was at Facebook now Meta for 11 months - cause I was on a maternity contract. I mean, I wasn't the one being maternity, but I was covering, you know - that one! And she is just awesome and her brain works in magical ways. She looks after all sorts of infrastructure and CRM and MarTech, but for big global companies and her and her patience and her drive, and just the way her brain works - I just said that, but it’s true. I love it. And she has blue hair, and she’s really cool. And we hung out outside of work.

Sydney Mulligan: Plus she paid for your first tattoo

Emily Poulton: I want to work with her again. Plus she paid for my first tattoo and loads of drinks. So kudos you girl. And she loves cats, and dogs! Boom!

Sydney Mulligan: You might want to work with her over Lauren

Emily Poulton: Literally in my diary for work, it used to say Cat Lady chat every two weeks. And people thought they could book meetings over that, but I was like, no, no. They could not. So there's that. Then there's my bestie back in my Korn Ferry days, who I saw again at Summit: Foley - my work husband, who now works at, I allowed to say where they work? Am I allowed to say all this? Is this top secret?

Lauren Aquilino: If it’s public information I’d say go for it

Emily Poulton: Okay, he works at Crowdstrike, and he is a Marketo/ automation genius who took coding to the next level and just did wild things. He was a huge rock and support to help me with my 2018 Keynote Panelist answers. He's just an amazing human being and I loved to hug him again the other week. So I would love to work with him again and he knows that one day, one day. He's just amazing, you would love him. He used to live in Philly, now he lives in San Francisco, so if we ever go to San Francisco, we've got a buddy to party with.

Lauren Aquilino: I’m down.

Emily Poulton: And I think you'll know this last one, a fellow work-husband again, my latest work husband who now works at Nokia. Mr. Matt Shaver. Shout out to him. I would want to work with him again…

Lauren Aquilino: Nokia

Sydney Mulligan: do you say Nokia?

Emily Poulton: it’s Nokia!

Lauren Aquilino: Are you, are you not a Narc? A Narc? A Nokia!

Emily Poulton: Nokia guys! Oh my goodness, we all know where Matt Shaver works now, nice!

Lauren Aquilino: Hi Matt. I do know you and you're awesome!

Emily Poulton: He is awesome. And he has this level of humour - it was instant connect from day one. I still like to have our daily goss sessions, although they don't happen as much, but I had a daily goss session with him, ever day for the best part of 2 years. I miss that and I need that in my life, so I need him back!

Lauren Aquilino: And one of my favorite things that our friend Krystle has said about tall people is that they bring unmatched vertical expertise, which is very true about Matt Shaver: very tall man.

Emily Poulton: Six foot five

Lauren Aquilino: Yeah

Emily Poulton: Well, he told me that. What's that, two metres? Or just shy of 2 metres.

Lauren Aquilino: She's like, what is that? I dunno. V tall

Emily Poulton: When I stand next to him, I am underneath his armpit, he can just tuck me under.

Sydney Mulligan: How tall are you?

Emily Poulton: I'm five, three and a half. 1m 63. I'm tiny

Lauren Aquilino: I'm less than that, but I don't know. 1m50? 1m55? 1m62?

Sydney Mulligan: Unsure

Lauren Aquilino: What are the?

Emily Poulton: Look we’re bringing Emmie to Europe, we need centimetres!

Lauren Aquilino: You know what? I actually agree with this, but I just don't know how it’s going to happen

Sydney Mulligan: I will give you centimeters, but we have to have gluten also.

Emily Poulton: Yay…

Lauren Aquilino: Fair !

Emily Poulton: So how tall are you both, ladies?

Lauren Aquilino: Sydney brings vertical expertise, yes!

Sydney Mulligan: I'm five seven

Emily Poulton: She’s tall!

Sydney Mulligan: I bring vertical expertise. We were actually talking about this on another podcast but I never think of myself as tall because I am not often the tallest person in my group. My family is tall, my best friend is tall. I have a picture standing next to Lauren and I look like the fucking Jolly Green Giant

Lauren Aquilino: I am also short, like it's not an average situation

Emily Poulton: Oh? What are you?

Sydney Mulligan: We’re like both ends of the spectrum

Emily Poulton: oh you’re so teeny. I can just slot right in the middle.

Sydney Mulligan: Yeah. She tiny. She little. Yeah. You can slot in between, that’s perfect. She just pops right into the middle.

Lauren Aquilino: 5”1, 5” 3, 5”7. Sydney!

Sydney Mulligan: Nokia! Never get over that. I love it though. Okay that's great. Those are good ones, those are some good people there. It’s great I add some height diversity into the crew also, that was a good data point that we had not previously considered, obviously.

Lauren Aquilino: But we will now be asking people who the tallest co-worker is that they've ever had. Proceed! It’s probably Shaver or I think Frederic Pinchon was maybe six three or six four.

Emily Poulton: He’s tall?

Lauren Aquilino: Yes. He’s very tall.

Emily Poulton: Really? I’m shocked!

Lauren Aquilino: Really?

Emily Poulton: You can tell from my face: I’m shocked! You know he's a cat man. Did you know that?

Lauren Aquilino: He likes cats?

Emily Poulton: Mm-hmm. His cat had kittens

Sydney Mulligan: I feel like he’s a superhero! I think the tallest co-worker I've ever had was probably Nate Smitha. And I loved him because I was shocked every time I saw him in person, like I forgot how tall he was. Every time I was like “oh my God”. I don't know how tall Nate is, but he's very, very tall

Emily Poulton: We should get Frederic, Nate and Shaver together

Lauren Aquilino: I feel so bad for tall people because 100% the only thing I can think of to say to a tall person when I see them for the first time is: “you’re tall!”

Sydney Mulligan: You're so tall! You're much taller than I expected. Yes. I reported to Nate for a long time when I was at Etumos, and he was super tall. And then I reported to Kristin Crowe and she was super short - she was probably the same height as you Lauren

Lauren Aquilino: No one ever says like, you are so short.

Emily Poulton: Yeah they do!

Lauren Aquilino: This just doesn't happen.

Sydney Mulligan: You have tall confidence, tall energy. That’s why I never think about the fact that you are such drastically different heights. You bring the vertical expertise but you are a little vertically challenged.

Emily Poulton: you don't need to say it to us, you can just pick us up and put us in your pocket

Lauren Aquilino: That’s right. Hop in!

Sydney Mulligan: I’m going to get a kangaroo pocket to hop around, Lauren. It'd be good. Your wound pack could fit in there.

Lauren Aquilino: Emily's showing a picture of her and Matt Shaver and she is just trying to like, I don't know

Sydney Mulligan: Add some inches

Emily Poulton: not like a polly pocket

Lauren Aquilino: She’s like, I am real, I am!

Sydney Mulligan: Alright, okay, so Emily next! This is a segment that is inspired by a Christmas present situation that you sometimes do for kids, it’s called something you want, something you need, something to wear, something to read. In theory, these are the four gifts you should get your kids for Christmas and nothing more - Lauren is probably better than I am. I'm psychotic and I buy those four things and then a dozen other things.

Emily Poulton: I was wondering where you got that from, it was so beautifully rhymy

Lauren Aquilino: Right!?

Sydney Mulligan: I wish I could say that we created it, but would love to hear from you: something you want. Can be anything, can be a thing or can be world peace. Now you're gonna really sound like a dick if you don't say world peace. Something you need, something to wear - either something you have and like to wear or something you want to acquire to wear - it can be anything, be creative! And something to read.

Lauren Aquilino: Go!

Emily Poulton: In any particular order or same order?

Lauren Aquilino: What ever makes you happy

Emily Poulton: Something you want? I want a new patio. I want a patio in my garden, I want my garden to look fancy

Sydney Mulligan: Does that mean the same as yard?

Lauren Aquilino: So garden means yard. Yes. It does not mean necessarily that there is a garden in the yard.

Sydney Mulligan: yeah, yeah, yeah, you're not growing vegetables and shit.

Emily Poulton: Well I am growing vegetables and shit where it's like there's no grass. where you.

Sydney Mulligan: But the patio is the part where there’s cement?

Emily Poulton: It’s the part where there is no grass - where there’s something, it could be stone or cement or it's just something that's just not ugly. And I need this in my life. I want it, yes for lounging, for that outdoor dining. I need this in my life. So this is my goal. I want it.

Sydney Mulligan: I have a question about this. Doesn't it rain all the time in London?

Emily Poulton: yes. But it was very sunny yesterday and I wished I could have just sat in my garden.

Lauren Aquilino: yesterday it was sunny! And I wished for a moment I had one. I have faith that it is April 5th and this is absolutely why this is something that you want because it shouldn't make sense. This shouldn't make sense.

Emily Poulton: Summer’s coming! I want a nice patio guys. It’s going to happen. That’s what I want, don’t take it from me.

Sydney Mulligan: I spent a summer in London in 2012 and it rained every fucking day - I’m not sure how much use you are going to get out of this patio.

Lauren Aquilino: I have a question about London. Why does everything close so early ?

Emily Poulton: Like what? Bars and clubs or shops?

Sydney Mulligan: Because of the Queen?

Emily Poulton: The Queen is dead.

Lauren Aquilino: All I know is that I was in London in 2011, and I was there for work. I worked every day nine to five, and then we went to the pub for one drink and then everything closed at seven.

Sydney Mulligan: She said the Queen is dead!

Long live the Queen is dead. Does that mean that everything can stay open until 9 now, like a normal shop? Why are the shops closing at 7pm?

Emily Poulton: Well because people have lives, they want to go to the pub before it closes

Lauren Aquilino: That’s what I am saying! Why is the pub closing at 8?

Emily Poulton: No, it doesn't close at eight. A pub will close at like 11.

Lauren Aquilino: Not on a Tuesday.

Emily Poulton: Well, it's because people live there and they don’t want to make noise. And if people wanna drink, they could just go to a bar or a club.

Lauren Aquilino: We don't have a difference between bars and pubs

Emily Poulton: things just start earlier.

Lauren Aquilino: All right. This is for another time, I'll write a petition, it’s fine.

Sydney Mulligan: okay,

Emily Poulton: But write it to the King

Sydney Mulligan: I was just going to say, the Queen is dead so you can’t ask her about it

Emily Poulton: We nearly broke her!

Sydney Mulligan: I didn't know that we were being so cavalier about the death of the Queen, but we have our representative from England

Emily Poulton: I’m just stating a fact. It's actually gonna be the King's coronation and I get a bank holiday!

Lauren Aquilino: Nice

Emily Poulton: Boom! Not that it means anything in the freelance world but still, I will not be working on that day!

Sydney Mulligan: I was going to say! You can have a bank holiday whenever you want to! Are you gonna go? Can you go to the King’s coronation?

Emily Poulton: I could probably go in the street yeah

Sydney Mulligan: Yea that sounds fun. Are you gonna do it?

Emily Poulton: you know, hop down. A hop and a skip. Yeah, I'll look into it and report back. How about that? Can I put a sticker on his car?

Sydney Mulligan: A Big Tech Energy sticker? Yeah, absolutely, I would love for us to get in trouble with the law

Lauren Aquilino: International law, right. I think it's pretty easy to do.

Sydney Mulligan: Okay something you need!

Emily Poulton: Am I allowed to be really pathetic ?

Sydney Mulligan: Always!

Emily Poulton: and say I need a husband! Get me a husband!

Lauren Aquilino: Anybody listening, what are your requirements?

Sydney Mulligan: Emmie’s most eligible bachelorette

Emily Poulton: I need a husband, who is going to look after me when I am sick?

Lauren Aquilino: your cats

Emily Poulton: Last week when I was dying. Well they didn't, did they? They just came to cuddle, not very helpful.

Sydney Mulligan: The cats will eat your body after you die

Emily Poulton: No they will not. Anyway so that's what I need. Something to wear - I feel like we’ve kind of overused this headband thing but, oh it’s between two things. I've got some legginy/jegginy things from Calzedonia. Do you have Calzedonia?

Sydney Mulligan: No

Emily Poulton: Oh my gosh it's amazing. And I have these biker leggings and I lived in them at Summit. They're just amazing - hugging in the right places and comfy and cool. And they weren't even that expensive.

Sydney Mulligan: I thought people weren’t wearing jeggings anymore? I thought they weren’t cool anymore.

Emily Poulton: Oh.

Sydney Mulligan: Not in the UK?

Emily Poulton: I think you should look at my photos and see what you think. No, but they're like, they're biker, so they're kind of leathery, but not.

Sydney Mulligan: Oh that’s cool

Emily Poulton: they're very cool. Anyway, that was a win. That and the Nike Airforce Ones with snake skin. So comfy! Loved them!

Lauren Aquilino: I am gonna take a look at these

Emily Poulton: I would recommend those. Get something to wear. And something to read... I mean, I only read home magazines, which is boring but it’s how I like to get inspired.

Lauren Aquilino: Oh I like that! I mean the only answers we've gotten so far are I don't read - which is mostly what people say

Sydney Mulligan: No, Rachel had an answer, she read something.

Emily Poulton: I do read. But I don’t know if I would recommend it yet as I haven’t finished it, but the home magazines are so inspiring

Lauren Aquilino: Yeah. They're fun.

Sydney Mulligan: So wait, are you getting physical magazines?

Emily Poulton: Oh Yeah.

Sydney Mulligan: Where do you get them?

Emily Poulton: I subscribe to them.

Sydney Mulligan: You are keeping the paper magazine industry afloat.

Emily Poulton: It's amazing. I love it. And then I can order them by color, so it looks like I'm very cool.

Lauren Aquilino: You know who else does that…

Emily Poulton: But apparently I'm not paying for them.

Sydney Mulligan: See these are things you can't do once you have a husband, because your husband is going to be like what the fuck are all these magazines piled up here? You don't even read them and then throw them away !

Emily Poulton: Well, maybe I’ll just throw the husband away. It's my house, it's my rules.

Lauren Aquilino: I think I see the problem. Just kidding.

Emily Poulton: Just kidding #cats.

Sydney Mulligan: Just kidding #cats. Great. That's the episode title: Just kidding #cats featuring Emily Poulton.

Emily Poulton: Yes, thank you

Sydney Mulligan: Our last segment is called PFB in the Streets. What we do here is -

Emily Poulton: I’m panicking!

Lauren Aquilino: Why?

Sydney Mulligan: Cuz this is the only thing that she can’t prepare for

Emily Poulton: I cannot prepare for this!

Lauren Aquilino: Well you just, that's the whole point is you just respond what's on top of your head, and that's it.

Emily Poulton: I'm gonna sip some tea

Sydney Mulligan: Yeah, and you know what, the only person who knows what I am about to say here is Lauren….

Lauren Aquilino: I don’t even know!

Sydney Mulligan: … I mean me! I’m the only person who knows what I am about to say here is me because Lauren doesn't even know

Lauren Aquilino: I can answer one if you want, if you need a warmup, that's fine.

Sydney Mulligan: No!

Lauren Aquilino: If not, just go for it.

Emily Poulton: Ok, let’s do it. Yes and from improv

Sydney Mulligan: You got it. You got it. You got it. You got it. You ready? You ready? Okay. PFB in the streets ready for a dollar, for a dollar. Adobe Summit.

Emily Poulton: Adobe Summit? what do I need to say about it?

Lauren Aquilino: Too slow. You're, you're not doing it right. Say whatever you want about it., whatever comes off the top of your head.

Emily Poulton: Gambling!

Sydney Mulligan: Gambling. Okay.

Lauren Aquilino: Did you win any money?

Emily Poulton: A bit, but then I had to give it back to its owner. There's a whole story, but that's a keep your pants on, I can't tell you that story. There's pictures too, but can’t tell you on this podcast. But they'll know, they'll know what I'm talking about.

Sydney Mulligan: Alright great. I won some money at Summit a few years ago, but then I ended up having to use it to pay for my friend’s wheelchair at the hotel

Lauren Aquilino: I think we could do an entire series of just Summit stories. We must.

Sydney Mulligan: I totally agree

Emily Poulton: yeah. Oh, for sure. Even like the pre-summit, summit stories, the day just before

Sydney Mulligan: Mm-hmm. Ok alright, for a dollar, AI.

Emily Poulton: oh chat GPT.

Lauren Aquilino: Do you like it? Do you hate it? Are you scared? Are you happy?

Sydney Mulligan: What else? How do you feel about AI?

Emily Poulton: It scares me. I think it can be good when it's helpful to you, but when it's going against you, I don’t like it. I don’t like losing against a robot

Sydney Mulligan: The robots are taking over.

Lauren Aquilino: I do think our jobs and everything is gonna look very different a year from now and two years from now, and three years from now. So we'll have to live with it

Sydney Mulligan: Yep. Okay. GDPR?

Emily Poulton: Bane of my life, but it's the money maker. Thank you very much clients.

Lauren Aquilino: Why are we still implementing it?

Sydney Mulligan: If you have still not implemented something for GDPR in 2023, five years after GDPR went live, call me because it's time!

Emily Poulton: You’d be surprised at how many I have done

Sydney Mulligan: I would not be surprised at all! Nothing surprises me anymore.

Lauren Aquilino: We’ve done one so far this year and another on the horizon.

Emily Poulton: Well there you go, it's about those American companies going global. It's a good thing!

Lauren Aquilino: Yeah that’s true

Sydney Mulligan: Yeah that’s probably part of it for sure, Okay. Acronyms.

Emily Poulton: I love acronyms. In fact, my Lady Ylime is an acronym.

Sydney Mulligan: What's Lady Ylime? Tell everyone.

Emily Poulton: it's Emily, but backwards. Is that an acronym? No, that's an anagram.

Sydney Mulligan: Nope, that's not an acronym.

Emily Poulton: Guys, I'm tired!

Lauren Aquilino: Loves anagrams. You know what? I think this is better than wanting to know which acronym she likes. I think the fact that Emily just told loves anagrams tells us a lot about her.

Sydney Mulligan: doesn’t know what an acronym is.

Emily Poulton: I mean, what’s my favourite one? I dunno, a LOL?

Lauren Aquilino: A LOL?

Emily Poulton: An L-O-L, a daily acronym

Lauren Aquilino: L.O.L.

Sydney Mulligan: Great great great, next! Taylor Swift.

Emily Poulton: Oh my gosh. don't get me started. I was in Vegas trying to make it to go and see Mean Girls the musical, and there was traffic everywhere and it made us late!

Sydney Mulligan: Wait, wait. Is your primary feedback about Taylor Swift, that you couldn't get into Mean Girls because the Taylor Swift Eras tour was happening in Vegas at the same time?

Emily Poulton: It made Uber life extremely difficult for Emily and her friends

Sydney Mulligan: Emily this is three strikes for me babe. Cats. Gluten. Taylor Swift. This is weak. This podcast may have damaged our relationship.

Lauren Aquilino: Do you hear her though? Do you her though? It was the M-U-S-I-C-A-L! You're not getting that part.

Sydney Mulligan: I am familiar with Mean Girls the Musical. I have seen it.

Emily Poulton: It wasn’t on the West End, I was dying to see it. And I saw it and it was great!

Lauren Aquilino: Oh it is very, very good

Emily Poulton: I need to see it again, closer. Closer to the action. I was too far up, couldn’t see a thing. But there were no more tickets left, so it was great to see it. I love musicals. Why are you looking at me like that?

Lauren Aquilino: Sydney, we can't judge people for their Pretty Funny Business on the streets answers

Sydney Mulligan: Why would we even do this if the purpose is not to judge people for their answers? Why have anyone on the podcast if the purpose is not to judge them for their answers? I thought that is what we were doing here.

Emily Poulton: Wow. Well, maybe you can invite me back when you feel like there's not enough people to judge.

Sydney Mulligan: I don’t know, you’re on thin ice!

Lauren Aquilino: I'll tell next time what the answers should be to please the God of Sydney.

Sydney Mulligan: All right, next topic. Consulting.

Emily Poulton: Consulting! It’s exciting, it's new, it's challenging and I'm not gonna say bread and butter, but I love it. Not the bread cause it’s got gluten, but consulting.

Sydney Mulligan: Gluten free bread and butter

Lauren Aquilino: butter and butter ! Just butter maybe.

Sydney Mulligan: butter and butter ! Ok this is the last one. Then we're gonna close this out. It is the most challenging one

Emily Poulton: Oh no.

Sydney Mulligan: You ready?

Lauren Aquilino: Yes, let's hear it Oh my God.

Sydney Mulligan: do an American accent.

Emily Poulton: Oh my god I can totally like do an American accent. We could’ve done the whole podcast like this. Sorry.

Lauren Aquilino: it's so bad.

Emily Poulton: What do you mean it's so bad? It's great!

Sydney Mulligan: I need you to say more things

Emily Poulton: Like, what do you want me to say? Like Taylor Swift?

Lauren Aquilino: TylorSwift.

Sydney Mulligan: Tyler Swift. That's Australian!

Lauren Aquilino: Say this: Taylor.

Emily Poulton: Taylor

Lauren Aquilino: There you go

Emily Poulton: A tailor

Lauren Aquilino: A Tailored Tayler. Taylor Swift

Sydney Mulligan: Las Vegas.

Emily Poulton: Las Vegas. Oh my god, it’s Vegas baby.

Lauren Aquilino: There you go beb

Sydney Mulligan: Ok that was pretty good

Emily Poulton: What are you laughing at

Lauren Aquilino: Nokia

Emily Poulton: I don't even know what that is.

Lauren Aquilino: It’s getting better. We'll train you. Can I tell you what my favorite, I don't know if it's called like a Britishism or what, for Emily? When we first started working together that I really had to get used to was, you like if somebody's telling you something and you agree with it and you just kind of wanna move on. Americans say okay. Like all right got it yeeah okay. But Emily says fine

Sydney Mulligan: Oh yes I have noticed this about you Emily, and fine would be something very…

Lauren Aquilino: offensive! Rude

Sydney Mulligan: It’s a little offensive

Lauren Aquilino: Yeah.

Sydney Mulligan: I can tell by your tone that it’s not how you mean it

Lauren Aquilino: So I'd be like can you look at the way this has been set up? And she goes, okay, fine. I'm like, what did I do? What did I say wrong ?

Emily Poulton: Ok fine, fine, fine.

Lauren Aquilino: We would just be like cool okay thanks. Or, okay okay got it. Or okay cool makes sense. Emily says, okay fine. And I'm like, shhhhhhhh

Sydney Mulligan: Okay fine! Be that way!

Emily Poulton: Is this why everyone hates me?

Lauren Aquilino: it might be! I mean if they're not also British, like saying fine after something is rude

Sydney Mulligan: No it's a little, a little abrupt… that's not the word I am looking for

Lauren Aquilino: passive aggressive a little bit.

Sydney Mulligan: Like if you say fine, things are very much not fine

Emily Poulton: Oh no but they are fine! The thing is there is an Americanism, which used to get me, was the, “oh no, you're good”. “Don't worry, you're good”. And I'm like, what? What do you mean I'm good? What do you mean, I'm just asking you a question or I'm apologizing. “No, no, it's fine you're good. Totally fine. You're good”. And you’re like, what?

Sydney Mulligan: That was a good American accent

Emily Poulton: I just don’t get it

Sydney Mulligan: Well what would you say?

Emily Poulton: Oh don’t worry about it. It’s ok. It’s fine!

Lauren Aquilino: same thing - it's fine! Fine I see.

Sydney Mulligan: Well that’s the same thing, interesting

Lauren Aquilino: We would say fine like when someone would say: “oh hey, I know you wanted to go to…”

Emily Poulton: Disneyland.

Lauren Aquilino: “...to Disneyland, but instead it's kind of rainy so we're gonna stay home today”. You'd be like, okay, fine. You'd be disappointed.

Emily Poulton: Well then you would say - FINE! You wouldn't say fine. It’s about tone darlings.

Sydney Mulligan: But in little micro contexts like that, still saying fine like that passive aggressively communicates that it's not fine

Emily Poulton: Ooooo well maybe we should put that in the signature - all Britishisms are not passive aggressive.

Lauren Aquilino: yeah, if Emily says fine, she really does mean fine. I wanna know how many people to sit there and be like wow, she’s kind of rude. And then you'd be like actually she’s nice, she surely can’t actually mean fine. Like, fine like that. That can't be what she means.

Emily Poulton: Wow. I guess if you write it though. Me and Sydney had a lot time together, when you were explaining something to me

Sydney Mulligan: Yes you said it so many times and it took me a few times to be like - she’s not mad, she’s ok.

Lauren Aquilino: If you've ever been personally offended by Emily saying fine, I need to know it.

Sydney Mulligan: You can contact us. You may be entitled to financial compensation. If you have been personally victimized by Emily’s British malapropisms

Lauren Aquilino: If you have been personally victimized by Emily Poulton, let us know

Emily Poulton: I don’t think we have a fine problem at this company

Sydney Mulligan: We do.

Lauren Aquilino: We do now! We didn’t, but now we do.

Sydney Mulligan: My parents, the inventors of toaster strudel will not be very excited to hear about this

Emily Poulton: The investors of email domains. No.

Lauren Aquilino: Post it notes

Sydney Mulligan: Alright - well that's it folks. Good one, good chat. Good..

Emily Poulton: …Laughing

Sydney Mulligan: Fish and chips
